EU demands half a billion from Debrecen

The municipality of Debrecen has to pay back 500 million forints to the EU because an inspection revealed irregularities in the implementation of a 22-billion forint investment. The deadline for paying is the end of March.

In 2003, Debrecen and four neighboring settlements won a support of 22 billion forints to be spent on upgrading the sewage system. 58 % of this amount was provided by the EU, 32 % by the Hungarian government and the own funds were 10 %. An inspection done by the EU revealed that a part of the sewerage works carried out in Hajdúsámson wasn’t included in the original application and that Debrecen didn’t invite public procurement tenders for the draining of 5 streets and this is why the EU reclaimed 500 million forints.
