Queen Elizabeth II., the monarch of the United Kingdom, has died at the age of 96 – Buckingham Palace announced on Thursday.

The Queen died in the 71st year of her reign, at her summer residence, Balmoral Castle in Scotland. From the moment of her death, her first-born son, the 73-year-old heir to the throne, Charles, is the British ruler.

Charles’ accession to the throne also means that the new king’s older son, Prince William of Cambridge, is the heir to the throne.
Queen Elizabeth was the fortieth Anglo-British monarch since William the Conqueror was crowned King of England in London’s Westminster Abbey on Christmas Day 1066, but none of his predecessors was given such a long life and so much time on the throne.
